David Ahrens, MS
Researcher
David Ahrens is a Researcher at the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute. He is also the
Coordinator of the Wisconsin Population Health Fellowship Program. The Fellowship Program, which is open to
students throughout the US, is a two-year service learning opportunity placing students in governmental and
community based health service organizations in Wisconsin. As the program coordinator, David oversees
recruitment, selection and placement of Fellows as well as development of learning activities such as courses,
conferences and seminars.
In addition, to his work with the Fellowship Program, David conducts research for the state's tobacco
surveillance and evaluation program and training and technical assistance service. He has authored numerous
papers on tobacco epidemiology, most recently, a study of exposure to secondhand smoke in homes. He has many
years of experience in public policy and consults with state and local organization on policy strategies.
David Ahrens has a Masters in Science in Industrial Relations (Labor Economics) from the University of
Wisconsin-Madison. Prior to his work in public health, David worked as the chief staff member of a legislative
committee on health policy and as the research director of a public employee labor union with many members
employed in health services.
