Article on Wisconsin's environmental health published in Wisconsin Medical Journal

"Measuring the Environmental Health of Wisconsin's Counties," an article co-authored by Jessica Athens
and Patrick Remington of the Population Health Institute and Marni Bekkedal, Kristen Malecki, and Henry
Anderson of the Department of Health Services, was recently published in the July issue of the Wisconsin
Medical Journal (vol. 107, no. 4). The authors review the indicators used in the Wisconsin County Health
Rankings, 2007 to assess environmental health and provide rankings of Wisconsin counties and the City of
Milwaukee on environmental health factors. The authors also address limitations and use of the study results.

The Population Health Institute's 2007 conference: Improving Wisconsin's Health: Prevention, Policy and
Priorities for Research included an opportunity for conference participants to highlight areas they believed
deserved more attention in public health research.

Patrick Remington named to Secretary's Advisory Committee On National Health Promotion and Disease
Prevention Objectives for 2020

Mike Leavitt, Secretary of Department of Health and Human Services, recently appointed Patrick Remington as one
of the members of the new advisory committee that will make recommendations for developing and implementing
national health promotion and disease prevention objectives for Healthy People 2020. At its first meeting on
January 31 and February 1, the committee surveyed the history of the Healthy People initiative and began
deliberations on the vision, mission, overarching goals, framework, and focus areas for Healthy People 2020.
Since 1979, Healthy People has set and monitored national health objectives to meet a broad range of health needs,
engage people across the nation to work together, guide individuals toward making informed health decisions, and
measure the impact of prevention activity.

Brockman and Schumann Participating in Wisconsin Women in Government Seminar
January 16, 2008
Traici Brockman and Casey Schumann, Fellows in the Wisconsin Population Health Fellowship Program, have won
scholarships to participate in the prestigious Wisconsin Women in Government Seminar. The program, offered by
the organization Wisconsin Women in Government and the La Follette School of Public Affairs at the University
of Wisconsin-Madison provides women working in the public and private sectors with management training,
networking opportunities and leadership development to help them build successful careers in government-related
fields.
In her capacity as an assistant to the Administrator of the Division of Public Health, Traici has focused on an
analysis of public health financing in Wisconsin. She is also working with the Governor's office to review
proposals on reducing infant mortality in the state.
Casey is currently working within the Division of Public Health's AIDS/HIV Program and the Communicable Disease
Epidemiology Section. Her work has focused on program planning and implementation related to HIV and STDs,
investigation of communicable disease outbreaks around the state, and epidemiologic activities to support
program initiatives.
