PHS Graduate Student Megan Zuelsdorff receives a scholarship to attend the 19th annual RAND Summer Institute
PHS Graduate Student Megan Zuelsdorff received a scholarship to attend the 19th annual RAND Summer Institute (RSI), which takes place in Santa Monica, CA, July 9-12, 2012. The RSI consists of two conferences addressing critical issues facing our aging population: a Mini-Medical School for Social Scientists and a Workshop on the Demography, Economics, Psychology, and Epidemiology of Aging. The primary aim of the RSI is to expose scholars interested in the study of aging to a wide range of research being conducted in fields beyond their own specialties.

PHS Assistant Professor Whitney Witt receives new MCHB Grant
Whitney P. Witt, PhD, MPH, Assistant Professor in the Department of Population Health Sciencies, received official notice from the Maternal and Child Health Bureau that her new grant, "Impact of Preconception and Contextual Factors on Birth and Child Health Outcomes," was funded.

The 2012 County Health Rankings Show What Influences How Healthy Residents Are, How Long They Live
More than 3,000 counties and the District of Columbia can compare how healthy their residents are and how long they live with the 2012 County Health Rankings, released on Tuesday, April 3, 2012. The Rankings are an annual check-up by the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation to assess the overall health of nearly every country in all 50 states.

PHS Emeritus Professor David A. Kindig, MD, PhD, to present the 2012 Thomas S. Inui Lecture
David A. Kindig, MD, PhD, Emeritus Professor of Population Health Sciences, and Emeritus Vice-Chancellor for Health Sciences at UW, has been invited to present the 2012 Thomas S. Inui Lecture at the Department of Population Medicine at Harvard Medical School and Harvard Pilgrim Care Institute on Thursday, April 12. He will be speaking on "Where Would you Put the Money? A Multisector Business Model for Population Health."

PHS Graduate Students Lauren Wisk and Megan Zuelsdorff both receive a 2012 Rankin/Skatrud Research Travel Award
PHS Graduate Students Lauren Wisk and Megan Zuelsdorff were both awarded a Rankin/Skatrud Research Travel award for 2012. These awards are to allow the trainees to travel to a scientific conference to present their research. These awards have been granted annually since 2000 as a tribute to the legacy of Dr. John Rankin and Dr. James B. Skatrud, both of whom were extraordinary mentors and scientists at UW-Madison for their entire professional careers.

PHS Doctoral Student Xiao Zhang Awarded the 2012 Dr. Catherine "Kit" Allen Outstanding Student Poster Award
PHS doctoral student Xiao Zhang has been awarded the 2012 Dr. Catherine "Kit" Allen Outstanding Student Poster Award for her abstract entitled, "Assessment of Non-participation Bias in a Probability Survey of Sexual Risk for HIV Infection among Mexican Migrants in Tijuana, Mexico."

PHS Assistant Professor Halcyon Skinner wins Best Poster Award at the 2012 American Society of Preventive Oncology meeting in Washington, DC
PHS Assistant Professor Halcyon Skinner received the Best Poster Award at the 36th Annual American Society of Preventive Oncology (ASPO) meeting held in Washington, DC, March 3-6, 2012. The Poster, "Telomere Length, Telomere Maintenance Genes, and Family History of Colorectal Cancer," describes preliminary results from a National Cancer Institute funded study of the role of telomere length and variants in telomere maintenance genes in the risk for and natural history of colorectal cancer.

PHS Graduate Student Abiola Keller to be inducted into the Edward A. Bouchet Graduate Student Honor Society
Abiola O. Keller, a doctoral candidate in the Population Health Sciences graduate program, is among three UW-Madison graduate students of color who will be inducted into the Madison Chapter of the Edward A. Bouchet Graduate Student Honor Society in a ceremony during its annual conference on Friday, March 9, at the Pyle Center.

Group Field Placement in Manitowoc Provides Learning Opportunity and Community Benefit
Students placed in a group field placement through a Wisconsin Center for Public Health Education and Training (WiCPHET) effort were featured in a Manitowoc Herald Times article for their work with the Mental Task Force. The students are part of the third such group placement over the past year and are working closely with the Northeast Area Health Education Center staff and the numerous community members and organizations involved with the Mental Health Task Force to assess the availability of mental health services in the area.
