Program Annoucements
Important comments from the program office

Here is some important information for you in planning your Field Work and Capstone Project.  Please make note of these dates!

Summer 2012 Field Experience: The deadline for submitting your Field Learning Agreement to Barb for a Summer 2012 Field Experience is as follows:

For an international/global health experience (where you are traveling outside of the country): February 24, 2012

For all other field experiences: April 13, 2012

You must take the Field Work Seminar (PHS 787) prior to beginning your field work.  If you are planning a summer experience and haven’t taken this on-line course, please register for it, right away.

May 2012 Graduation: If you are planning to graduate in May 2012, you must have all of your course work, field work requirements, and capstone project (Presentation, paper, and oral defense) completed by Friday, May 11, 2012.

Schedule your oral defense well in advance of this deadline so that you don’t run into any problems with meeting the deadline or making edits on your paper.  Make a timeline for completion now, working back from that firm deadline.

Public Health Symposium: Mark your calendars for the Spring 2012 Public Health Symposium on Friday, May 11, 2012.   There is a long list of students who are to be presenting on that day. A note has been sent to those are presenting.  If you haven’t received an email from Barb about the Symposium and you are planning to present this spring, please contact her immediately.

Remember, Symposia are held twice each year, once in May and once in November.  You must present at one of these two events, unless you make special arrangements with me well in advance of the event.

Here are important milestones to note if you are presenting:

·         Project title, abstract, capstone members, and student bio due on Friday, April 6, 2012

·         Practice day on Friday, May 4, 2012

·         Final PPT presentations due on Monday, May 7, 2012

Even if you aren’t presenting, you should come and support your student colleagues and see how the symposium runs.

Scholarships for Returning Adults, Single Parents, and Other Nontraditional Students for 2012-2013

  • Are you a returning adult or nontraditional student looking for funding to finish your UW-Madison degree?
  • Do you have at least one academic year remaining before completing your degree (Fall 2012-Spring 2013)?
  • Are there challenges affecting your academic progress (e.g., struggling with finances, raising a child while coping as a single parent, adapting to school after a significant break in your education)?

Then you may be eligible for one of our academic-year scholarships, awarded annually in several categories.  The application deadline is March 1, 2012 for scholarships beginning in Fall.

For full details and application instructions, see our website at: http://www.dcs.wisc.edu/info/finanserv/Nontrad-scholars.htm

Or simply go to our home page at http://www.dcs.wisc.edu/info/  and look for the link to financial assistance.

With funding from a number of generous donors, the office of Adult Career & Special Student Services (ACSSS), a part of UW-Madison’s Continuing Studies, offers a number of annual scholarships.  These awards are designed to help returning adults, single parents, and other nontraditional students at UW-Madison who are pursuing undergraduate, graduate, or professional degrees.  Scholarship amounts vary by the type of award.  Last year scholarships were awarded to 22 students, and the amounts ranged from $1,000 to $5,000 for the academic year.
