2008 Ph.D. Qualifying Exam

Information for Ph.D. Students

The purpose of the Qualifier Examination is to assess whether students have acquired and are able to integrate knowledge of key subject areas and methods sufficiently to be able to conduct doctoral research in population health sciences.

Request to take Exam
The deadline for Ph.D. students to declare their intent to sit for the qualifying exam is June 1st. These students will receive a general Qualifier preparation statement and a list of core concepts (for the sections that participate) when final versions are approved.

Schedule and Location of Exam
The Qualifying Exam will be in Room 2121 HSLC. The Exam Schedule is as follows:

Epidemiology 8:30 - 11:30 Monday, July 7th

Statistics 1:30 - 4:30 Monday, July 7th

HSR/Determinants 1:30 - 4:30 Tuesday, July 8th

Question and Answer Sessions
These Q&A sessions will be offered to ensure all students have the opportunity to ask questions prior to the exam date. Students are expected to come prepared to ask questions at the Q & A sessions. The Q & A sessions will not be comprehensive reviews of the coursework for the stats/hsr-determinants/epidemiology sections of the exam.

Monday, June 16: 2:00-4:00 in WARF 758 (Statistics)

Tuesday, June 17: 2:00-4:00 in WARF 758 (Epidemiology)

Wednesday, June 18: 2:00-4:00 in WARF 758 (HSR/Determinants)

Old Exams
Exams conducted prior to June 2005 are available in the Commons for review and copying. These exams are intended to guide your course of study. You should not assume that exam question format or content will necessarily follow old exams. Exams administered in June 2005 or later are not available for circulation. On the day of the exam, when you have completed your exam, the question booklets will be collected along with the answer booklets for each part of the exam.

Notes about Exam Days
You will need to bring a calculator.

Student responses for the Epidemiology and HSR/Determinants sections will be typed at a secure non-networked computer. Due to the mathematical/equation nature of the Statistics portion, will be handwritten. Writing tablets (lined paper) and erasable ink pens will be supplied for the Statistics portion of the exam (students can bring their own pens if they wish). Write as neatly as possible. Neat answers are easier for the graders to read and understand. Answers that graders cannot read will receive no credit.

Do not bring paper, notes, or books into the exam room.

You may bring a beverage and quiet snacks. Be considerate of others taking the exam.

HSR/Determinants article: Since the HSR/Determinants section of the exam usually includes an article, students will receive the HSR/Determinants article upon conclusion of the Statistics exam (on the 1st day) and have the rest of that day and the morning of the next to review it. Please note that you will not be able to bring your copy of the HSR/Determinants article into the exam as notes are not permitted when taking the exam. You will be provided a new copy of the article at the beginning of the HSR/Determinants portion of the qualifying examination.

Notification of Results
Notification letters (in sealed envelopes) regarding the qualifying examination results are expected to be delivered to student mailboxes in WARF by August 1st (barring any unforeseen circumstances.) If you prefer to have your results delivered in another format, such as email, you must make a formal request in writing to Kelly Haslam no later than July 1st. Completed exams will not be returned and will not be available for review by students.
