Gordon Johnsen Fellowships

The Gordon Johnsen Health Management Fellowship was established in 1988 with a gift from the Madison General Hospital Board of Trustees. Gordon Johnsen received his Bachelor of Arts and Master of Science from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a Master of Arts from the University of Minnesota. He joined Madison General Hospital in 1958 and served as Administrator until 1975 at which time he was named President of Madison General Hospital, a post he held until 1984.  He served for many years as a Clinical Professor in the Department's Programs in Health Management.
A History of Programs in Health Management

He was President of General Health Services from 1983-1987 and Chairman of the Board of Meriter Health Services, Inc. from 1987-1988. Gordon was a founding member of the Board of Directors of VHA (Voluntary Hospitals of America) in 1977. He has served on various boards, including Wisconsin Hospital Association, Trinity College, Edgewood College, Viking Insurance and Oakwood Lutheran Homes Association. He is a Fellow in the American College of Hospital Administrators and served as a Trustee of the American Hospital Association.

The Fellowship in his honor will be awarded by the Graduate Student Awards Committee annually to a student in the MS/MPH/PhD program who is interested in Health Policy and Management.
