Opportunities & Updates
STARS Update
Carissa Gottlieb, Angie Kempf, and Peter Vila recently went to Madison
West High School to give the health professions class a STARS
presentation, in which they learned about epidemiology and public
health. Matt Maenner also helped prepare the presentation. The
talk was a huge success, and the STARS group has been invited
back to give another presentation next semester.
Student Organization Elections
The next meeting will be on Monday, Feb. 5, at 10:45 AM in room 758.
We will be discussing some current business and will get updates
from our committee liaisons, as well as hold the elections for
the officer positions in the student org. There is now a sign-up
sheet on the student org bulletin board on the 7th floor
for you to sign up or nominate other people for positions. Please
nominate people to take positions
for the coming year and join us for some pizza on Monday!
Leadership
Conference Fellow Pop Health
Students,
I wanted to remind
you all that there is an upcoming leadership conference coming
up in the first week of February. It will probably be heavy on
undergrads, but at the very least it should be entertaining, there
is a keynote speaker on leadership (Michael Miller), and it's completely
free.
I know we're all
busy, but if you've got nothing better to do on a Saturday, join
me at this conference and we'll have a good time and maybe learn
a thing or two in the process.
The conference will
be held on Saturday, Feb. 3, from 11:30 to 4:30, with registration
beginning at 10:30, and will take place in the Memorial Union.
You can register here if you're interested, and feel free to shoot
me an e-mail at pmvila@wisc.edu
if you have any questions about it.
Best of luck in
the New Year!

trying to juggle too many things as a graduate student? Are
you neglecting your physical and mental health because of the many
roles you play? If you find yourself nodding in agreement,
we have a way to jumpstart your semester.
Join
the GSC and MGN for an afternoon of group activities designed to
connect students on a more personal level. Discuss ways to
find balance in your life. Reflect in quiet meditation in an
individual activity called the labyrinth.

Polar Plunge
Some of our own Pop
Health students will be jumping in a frozen Lake Monona on Feb. 17
to raise money for the Special Olympics. The team has already raised
almost $300 and will be making team shirts on Friday, Feb. 9. If
you'd like to join the team, let Peter Vila (pmvila@wisc.edu) know,
and we can get you signed up! If you'd like to donate money to the
Pop Health Team (called "The Protective Effect of Low Ambient
Temperature on Seasonal Affective Disorder) you can do so by logging
onto the Special
Olympics website at http://www.specialolympicswisconsin.org/pp07/team.asp?id_t=344 and
donating to a specific team member.
