work at the School of Pharmacy by participation in the Center for Global
Health. Dr. Johnson has been most active in the Ecuador field school,
having traveled to that country and assisted with in-country student
instruction since 2004. He is now also working to develop field experiences
at the Hillside Clinic in Belize for senior pharmacy students. Dr. Johnson
also has been actively involved in the U.S.-Thai Pharmacy Consortium since
its inception over a decade ago. He has traveled frequently to Thailand to
teach pharmacotherapy workshops and has led University of Wisconsin pharmacy
student field experiences in that country. He also frequently travels to
Central and South America as a pharmacist on medical mission teams. Dr.
Johnson is the editor of the Journal of the Pharmacy Society of Wisconsin
and has used that publication to raise awareness of global health issues
among its readers.
“The importance of
health science students gaining a greater understanding of the health needs
of the world cannot be overstated. Travel to other countries, especially
those of the developing world, for purposes other than vacation, offers the
student insight into public health issues taken for granted in the United
States. Participation in the offerings of the Center for Global Health is
valuable for all students, not just those who might be entertaining a
career in some aspect of global health, for global health is also directly
linked to local health in our own communities.”
