Paul Peppard joined the faculty of the Department of Population Health Sciences as Assistant Professor in 2008. Previously, he was a staff scientist (1999-2005) at UW-Madison, and then Director of Scientific Operations for the Wisconsin Sleep Cohort Study (2005-present). He holds MS degrees in preventive medicine and statistics, and a PhD degree in epidemiology from UW-Madison.

Dr. Peppard conducts NIH-funded epidemiologic research into the causes and consequences of sleep disorders—especially sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) in adults. Specific areas of interest include the natural history of SDB; the impact of the obesity epidemic on SDB prevalence; the behavioral (e.g., physical inactivity, weight gain, alcohol use), metabolic and genetic predictors of SDB; and outcomes of SDB (e.g., hypertension, depression, mortality).

Other areas of current interest include health disparities, summary measures of population health, and population health monitoring. Previously, Dr. Peppard conducted research as an environmental epidemiologist, in the area of childhood lead poisoning.
