Biography:
Dr. Ana P. Martinez-Donate is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Population Health Sciences, University of Wisconsin – Madison. She received a Ph.D. in Health Psychology from Universidad Autónoma de Madrid in 1999, as well as an Expert Degree in Epidemiology from the National School of Public Health, Spain (2000). Between 2000 and 2005, she received post-doctoral training and worked as a Research Scientist at the Center for Behavioral Epidemiology and Community Health, San Diego State University. In August 2005, she was hired as an Assistant Professor at the Graduate School of Public Health, San Diego State University. Since 2003, she has served as reviewer for several scientific journals, including Tobacco and Nicotine Research, Journal of Adolescent Health, American Journal of Public Health, and Pediatrics. She joined the Department of Population Health Sciences, University of Wisconsin – Madison in September 2007.
Dr. Martinez-Donate’s research interests include HIV prevention and tobacco control, with emphasis on Latino populations and health disparities. Her work is characterized by the application of a behavioral ecological framework to the analysis of determinants of health-related behaviors and the development of intervention strategies at the population level. Currently, she is serving as Principal Investigator (PI) for a NIH-funded grant aimed at estimating the risk for HIV infection, identifying risk determinants, and examining health care access among Mexican migrants traveling through the San Diego – Tijuana border region. She is also the PI for a community-collaborative project with Planned Parenthood Wisconsin, Inc. to evaluate the effectiveness of a lay health adviser intervention to promote breast and cervical cancer screening among Latinas in Dane County. Courses Taught:
Dr. Martinez-Donate has taught graduate-level courses on research methods and proposal writing in health promotion; theoretical foundations of health promotion; and prevention and control of chronic disease. She has also served as a guest lecturer for several undergraduate and graduate courses.
Currently, she teaches PH650, Social and Behavioral Sciences in Public Health.
