Dr. Katz joined the UW faculty in 1995 in the departments of Medicine and Population
Health Sciences. After completing his residency training in medicine at Loyola University of Chicago, Dr. Katz obtained fellowship training in decision analysis and health services research at Dartmouth and at New England Medical Center. He received a MSc in clinical epidemiology at the Harvard School of Public Health.
Dr. Katz’s research interests include the evaluation of guidelines and other
clinical strategies using epidemiologic and decision-analytic methods. His
project, "Improving the Evidence Base for Practice Guidelines Prior to
Their Dissemination," aims to evaluate the potential utility of national
guidelines for management of unstable angina, and will demonstrate how the
results of guideline evaluation can be used to improve the care of patients with
symptoms suggestive of acute cardiac ischemia in the emergency department. He
also recently led an investigation to determine the effectiveness of utilizing
non-physician staff to implement the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality
Smoking Cessation guideline, using a randomized controlled trial involving eight
primary care clinics.
In addition, Dr. Katz maintains an active general internal medicine practice and teaches principles of evidence-based medicine to UW resident physicians.
