Bridget Booske, PhD, MHSA
Senior Scientist
Bridget is a Senior Scientist and directs the Applied Population Health Research unit at the Population
Health Institute. She is currently working on the "Making Wisconsin the Healthiest State" project, a research
and translation effort funded by the Wisconsin Partnership Fund for a Healthy Future. The objectives of this
four-year project are to identify the most effective investments to help Wisconsin become the nation's
healthiest state and to monitor Wisconsin's progress toward achieving this goal with less health disparity.
She also oversees the preparation of the annual Wisconsin County Health Rankings and coordinates the
recruitment and placement of graduate student project assistants. With funding from the RWJ Health & Society
Scholars program, Bridget is developing a new web site for policy makers and scholars entitled "Understanding
the Health of Populations."
Bridget joined the Institute after working at the Center for Health Systems Research
and Analysis (CHSRA) for 15 years. During that time she led
numerous research projects funded by federal and state government,
addressing consumer decision making, consumer information, consumer
satisfaction, performance measurement, quality improvement, and health
insurance and costs. She is an expert in consumer decision making and
in the design and evaluation of information for use by health care
consumers, providers, and managers. Under contract to the Department of
Health and Family Services, she researched consumer needs for information
and then developed, tested, and implemented the Wisconsin Consumer Guide to
Health Care (dhfs.wisconsin.gov/guide).
Her work in consumer choice of health plans and treatment has been funded by
the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), the Agency for
Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), and the Department of Defense. Most
recently, Bridget served as Principal Investigator for two five-year CAHPS®
projects for CMS: the Medicare Fee-for-Service and Medicare Disenrollment
Reasons Surveys. In addition to collecting, analyzing, and reporting data to
the public, the latter project involved working with health plans to support
their quality improvement efforts. Bridget has worked on similar efforts in
other health and long term care settings.
Before joining CHSRA, Bridget worked in several administrative positions in a
variety of health care settings in Massachusetts, Michigan, and Washington,
DC; including a physician group practice, a federally qualified health
center, major academic medical centers, and a health insurance company. Bridget
received a Doctorate degree in Industrial Engineering with a focus on
Decision Science and Health Systems from UW -Madison. In addition, she
has a Masters in Health Services Administration from the University
of Michigan School of Public Health and a B.A. in Economics and Geography
from Clark University in Worcester, MA. She grew up in England and
moved to the U.S. at the age of 17. She became a U.S. citizen in 1996.
