Alison Bergum, MPA
Assistant Researcher
Alison Bergum is an Assistant Researcher with the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute (PHI) in
the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health. She holds a Masters degree in Public Affairs
from the La Follette School of Public Affairs at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and has been working for
the university since 2005. Alison currently splits her time between the Institutes' Health Policy and Program
Evaluation units.
As a member of the Health Policy unit, Alison serves as the lead staff for the Consumer Interests and Privacy
Advisory Group of Wisconsin's eHealth Care Quality and Patient Safety Board as well as the lead staff for the
Board's 51.30 Workgroup. These volunteer groups examine the electronic exchange of health care information from
a consumer perspective as well as privacy and security issues surrounding exchange, providing advice to the
eHealth Board as requested. Alison also plays an active role in the Evidence-Based Health Policy Project, a
partnership between PHI, the La Follette School of Public Affairs, and the Wisconsin Legislative Council. The
objectives of this project are two-pronged: (1) to advance health in Wisconsin by providing policy makers with
timely, non-partisan, high quality information for evidence-based decision-making; and (2) to increase
involvement of UW faculty research and teaching activities in topical issues of state public policy.
As a member of the Evaluation unit, Alison partners with the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction to
evaluate its Project to Improve the Management of Drug and Violence Prevention Programs. This project aims to
improve the state's management of local drug and alcohol prevention programming and to enhance Wisconsin schools'
and districts' capacity to use data to inform decision-making and evaluation in the arenas of AODA and violence
prevention programming.
Prior to her current projects, Alison assessed Wisconsin's progress towards 'Transforming Wisconsin's public
health system,' one of three overarching goals of the State Health Plan, and contributed to the creation of an
evidence-based public health practice Web site for Wisconsin's Division of Public Health. She came to PHI from
the Wisconsin Department of Administration's Division of Executive Finance and Budget, following four years in
the non-profit sector as a development associate and grassroots organizer.
