The major research goals of the John Rankin Laboratory of Pulmonary Medicine (Jerome Dempsey PhD, Director and PI; Curtis Smith PhD, Co-I) are: 1) To elucidate the ventilatory interactions between peripheral and central chemoreceptors especially as these pertain to the pathogenesis of sleep apnea, breathing disorders that accompany chronic heart failure, and control of regional blood flow at rest and during exercise in health and chronic heart failure. 2) To determine the effects of respiratory muscle work and arterial oxygenation on locomotor muscle fatigue and blood flow in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. 3) To determine the effects of chronic heart failure on blood flow distribution between respiratory and locomotor muscles during exercise."
